The DUIYASANA Women’s Rugby Team has made history by becoming the first club to officially participate in Lautoka’s inaugural women’s rugby competition, representing a significant milestone for the sport in the Sugar City. The team has already commenced preparations for the upcoming club games, with strong interest from female players eager to join the sport.

Coach and player Ana Balenaika expressed excitement about the encouraging turnout at training sessions: “We’ve received a good number of women coming out to train, and it’s exciting to see the enthusiasm for women’s rugby in Lautoka.” The team is made up of women from various provinces, highlighting the diverse talents available within the community.

Miri Qauqau, manager of women’s rugby in Lautoka, emphasized that this initiative is about creating opportunities and breaking down barriers for women in sports. She commented, “We are not only promoting women’s participation in rugby but also making history by establishing club games under the Lautoka Rugby Union banner.”

This new competition, which will run parallel to the men’s matches, reflects a broader movement towards inclusivity and empowerment in sports, akin to initiatives seen in recent women’s rugby league competitions throughout Fiji. Similar events, such as the inaugural Sports Well League Tag Championship won by the Yasawa Saints, showcase the growing interest and participation of women in rugby, underscoring a hopeful shift toward greater representation in athletics.

As the Lautoka competition approaches, organizers are optimistic that additional teams will join, fostering a sustainable future for women’s rugby in the region. This not only enhances the visibility of women’s sports but also contributes to a more equitable environment within competitive fields.

In conclusion, the establishment of Lautoka’s women’s rugby competition represents a landmark development for the sport and for female athletes in Fiji, offering them new opportunities to engage, compete, and excel in rugby. It promises to inspire many women to pursue sports, reinforcing the importance of inclusivity and empowerment in athletic endeavors.
