Weather Update
Issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre Nadi at 11:29 AM on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
Hold onto your umbrellas, folks! A heavy rain alert is now in effect for Yasawa, Mamanuca, Northern Division, and the eastern half of Viti Levu (that includes the lovely Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, Tailevu, Naitasiri, and Ra). We’re also keeping an eye on Lau, Lomaiviti Group, Kadavu, and their smaller island buddies. If you want the nitty-gritty details, just hop on over to the website.
What’s the scoop? A sluggish trough of low pressure is hanging around like that one friend who overstays their welcome. This means cloud cover, showers, and rain are planning to crash the party and stay until tomorrow.
Forecast until midnight:
Expect occasional rain, sometimes heavy enough to make you question your choice of footwear over Yasawa, Mamanuca, Northern Division, Lau, Lomaiviti, Kadavu, and Eastern Viti Levu. Rain will start to ease from the north by tomorrow, but today? It’s party time for the clouds! Elsewhere, it’ll be partly cloudy with showers popping up in the afternoon, becoming more frequent and heavy in the evening and overnight. Like that spontaneous dance-off at a wedding, you won’t see it coming until it’s right there! Just a heads up: localized heavy falls might lead to some flash flooding in low-lying areas, so keep your toes dry. Moderate to fresh southeast to northeast winds will be making a guest appearance too, along with moderate to rough seas.
Looking ahead to Friday:
Cloudy periods with some showers are on the agenda for Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, Tailevu, Naitasiri, Ra, Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands, as well as Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Elsewhere? You’re in for a treat (or a trick, depending on how you feel about thunderstorms). Expect fine weather except for those cheeky afternoon or evening showers and the thunderstorm shenanigans that might cause heavy falls – definitely not the weather to silently sip your tea outside! Moderate to fresh winds and seas will continue to make things interesting.
Here’s the local breakdown for a few spots:
Navua / Suva / Nausori: Occasional rain and thunderstorms are in store. On Friday, a mix of cloudy periods and showers with those infamous afternoon thunderstorms will be knocking at your door!
Nadi / Lautoka / Ba: Partly cloudy with afternoon showers today. Expect frequent and heavy rain in the evening but do keep your hopes high for a drier morning tomorrow. Friday looks fine except for a few possible showers and thunderstorms later.
Sigatoka/Coral Coast: Similar to Nadi, expect some showers in the afternoon, turning heavy in the evening. Friday keeps that trend with afternoon or evening thunderstorm entertainment!
Yasawa/Mamanuca: Occasional heavy rain and thunderstorms will keep you company today. But fret not, things will start to ease tomorrow.
Labasa and Savusavu: Brace yourself for occasional torrential rain today. Friday’s forecast is similar to those unexpected plot twists in your favorite series – cloudy with some showers and thunderstorm suspense.
Lau/Lomaiviti and Kadavu: Rainy days and thunderstorm surprises are on the horizon for you too, easing a bit by tomorrow.
Rotuma: Cloudy with a chance of brief showers. Moderate to fresh west to northwesterly winds are flowing through, along with a drama-filled sea.
Forecast for Friday: Just brief showers for Rotuma, keeping things simple.
So, grab your raincoat, keep an eye on the skies, and let Mother Nature do her thing!
