Policing Minister Ioane Naivalurua has dismissed the claims made by Opposition MP Hem Chand that the incineration of over four tonnes of methamphetamine last week led to health issues for local residents. Speaking in Parliament, Naivalurua emphasized that the incineration, which was conducted under strict standards and protocols, was critical for law enforcement to mitigate the drug threat and was carried out with minimal environmental impact.
He reassured the public about their health and safety, stating, “There is no cause for alarm. Our people’s safety and security are integral to the well-being of the nation.” He further highlighted the pervasive impact of drugs, crime, and violence on communities and expressed confidence that Fijians would unite to support their neighborhoods.
The minister’s remarks come in the wake of concerns raised by local schools and residents following the incineration at the Dignified Crematorium in Davuilevu, which reportedly released significant amounts of thick smoke. Previous reports had indicated that students from nearby schools, such as Bhawani Dayal and Nasinu Muslim Primary, experienced headaches and respiratory discomfort, leading to the distribution of masks among students.
Despite these concerns, Naivalurua emphasized the need for a collective approach to address such pressing challenges, urging the community to focus on solutions rather than political rhetoric. This call echoes past sentiments expressed by police leaders, affirming that safety protocols were in place during the drug destruction operations, which included comprehensive security measures evaluated by law enforcement.
The aim behind these operations is not only to eliminate hazardous substances from circulation but also to reinforce a commitment to creating a safer environment. The collaborative efforts between various government ministries and law enforcement agencies signal a unified stand against drug-related crime in Fiji, presenting a hopeful outlook for a healthier future.
Through these actions, authorities intend to demonstrate their unwavering commitment to safeguarding public health while facing the drug crisis head-on, reinforcing that Fiji is actively moving toward a more secure and drug-free society.
