Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed his gratitude yesterday to the striking workers of the Vatukoula Gold Mines and their families during a meeting at the Ba Civic Centre. Rabuka assured them that there was hope after 33 years of struggle since the workers initiated their strike on February 27, 1991. He acknowledged the numerous challenges they had faced over the decades.

Rabuka expressed his thanks to God for providing an opportunity to address the issue, emphasizing that the Coalition Government is dedicated to meeting the people’s needs. He also praised Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh and his team for successfully negotiating a resolution, which includes a $9.2 million payout announced in the 2024-2025 National Budget.

Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh stated that 185 union members will receive $10,000 each starting August 1. For the 183 strikers who have since passed away, their cases will need to be reviewed through a legal process.
