A total of $335,000 has been distributed to 24 recipients as part of a government-supported initiative designed to transform grassroots ideas into sustainable job-creating ventures. This funding was allocated under the iTaukei Trust Fund Business and Investment Ready Support Grant Scheme.

Ifereimi Vasu, the Minister for iTaukei Affairs, announced that over 100 applications were received following a nationwide call for expressions of interest that concluded on April 28. The selection process involved a three-stage assessment, focusing on the potential for elevation, scalability, and positive impact on communities.

Vasu highlighted that the primary aim of these grants is not only to find innovative ideas but also to identify projects with the highest potential for job creation and sustainable growth across different regions of Fiji. The selection panel ensured a broad national representation, aiming to enhance the reach and effectiveness of the initiative.

The funded projects fall into several key strategic categories: innovation and food processing, tourism development, community empowerment, bakery enterprises supporting local livelihoods, and partnerships with the Tutu Rural Training Centre.

Vasu reiterated that these grants are part of a larger strategy to integrate indigenous participation into the mainstream economy, emphasizing the need for recipients to demonstrate leadership and community impact. He encouraged those whose proposals were not selected to continue refining their ideas for future opportunities, promoting a culture of resilience and perseverance.

This initiative echoes similar efforts in recent years to foster entrepreneurship among iTaukei landowners and local businesses, reflecting a commitment to alleviating economic challenges in the community. Programs like the Business Ready Support Scheme (BRSS) and collaborative projects with organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) underscore a shared goal of empowering local entrepreneurs.

The continued focus on innovation and community development reinforces a hopeful narrative for Fiji’s economy, suggesting a brighter, inclusive future driven by local entrepreneurship and sustainable practices.
