A heartwarming initiative has taken place at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital in Nasese, Suva, where a specialized surgical team conducted life-saving heart surgeries for 13 young patients, including a seven-month-old baby and a 10-month-old infant. This remarkable undertaking was part of the hospital’s 25th surgical mission, facilitated by a partnership with the UK-based charitable foundation Healing Little Hearts.
The team, led by Dr. Prem Venugopal, a cardiothoracic surgeon from the Queensland Children’s Hospital, included experts from Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea. Their collective effort ensured that all 13 children, hailing from Fiji, received vital medical care.
Dr. Krupali Tappoo, the hospital director, highlighted the collaboration with the Ministry of Health and various local hospitals, such as CWM Hospital and Labasa Hospital, along with Aspen Lautoka Hospital, which played a significant role in supporting this mission.
A heartfelt story emerged from this experience as the mother of seven-month-old Yuvaani Chand expressed her immense gratitude towards the hospital. She encouraged other parents who might be hesitant about seeking medical help to bring their children in for evaluation and treatment. “I am thankful to the doctors, nurses and the staff here for taking care of us so well,” she said, reflecting on her daughter’s swift recovery.
After just three days at the hospital, Yuvaani’s mother felt reassured by the supportive environment created by the hospital staff. She expressed appreciation for the facility, which offers treatments free of charge, saying, “We are grateful and blessed to have this children’s hospital which has no billing counter.”
This medical mission not only transformed the lives of the young patients but also fosters hope within the community, emphasizing the importance of accessible healthcare for children in need.
