Siteri Namere Nanovo’s recent achievement of being named dux at Saint Thomas High School in Lautoka is truly inspiring. Unlike many of her peers who have benefitted from strong family support, Siteri has had a challenging upbringing. Since her primary school days, she has balanced her studies with responsibilities at home, including chores and preparing lunches for her family.
At just 18 years old, Siteri has been raised by her father, Ratu Sela Vunakasi Nanovo, who has taken on the demanding role of a single parent to her and her five siblings. She dedicated her dux trophy to him, expressing gratitude for his unwavering commitment to their education, despite the hardships they faced. “This dux trophy is for my Ratu; he has selflessly looked after us because he knows good education will lead to a better future,” Siteri stated.
The family lives in Natabua, near the school, and Ratu Sela works in the construction industry. Siteri acknowledged the sacrifices her father has made for their well-being and emphasized the importance of education as a pathway to a better life. “Watching my dad’s sacrifices has inspired me to strive for better education and a better job to help him,” she remarked.
Working together, Siteri and her sisters manage household tasks and support their younger siblings with schoolwork. She credits her success to the strength she finds in her faith, which has empowered her to prioritize her studies effectively.
