Akmal Ellyas Ali’s life story exemplifies how personal struggle can be transformed into a platform for empowerment and positive change, particularly for the youth of the Pacific region. Raised amidst the rural landscapes of Fiji, alongside his early experiences on his grandparents’ sugar cane farm, Akmal faced the challenges of dyslexia and social stigmas during his educational journey. Despite these hurdles, he found his passion for learning and turned his focus toward enabling others through his work with the United Nations Association for the Pacific.
Inspired by his grandfather’s legacy as a magistrate and his own unrealized pursuit in law, Ali recognized the power of civil society to transcend political boundaries and enact meaningful change. His leadership at the University of the South Pacific, highlighted by his invitation to present at Oxford University, was a turning point that solidified his belief in dreaming big and working diligently towards those dreams.
In 2013, Akmal took a significant step by leading a Model UN simulation, which motivated him to establish the United Nations Association of Fiji in 2014. This initiative focused on connecting Fijian youth with international values and opportunities, particularly through promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Mobilizing over 3000 young people in 2018 for these goals marked a milestone in making global objectives resonate personally with local communities.
Akmal’s vision extends to building regional institutions that influence policy at every level, emphasizing the substantial impact that local initiatives can have globally. His advice to young leaders emphasizes the importance of contributing to a peaceful and resilient Pacific, building success gradually without succumbing to the allure of instant gratification.
Through faith and commitment to lifelong learning, including his plans to pursue advanced studies in humanitarian coordination or diplomacy, Ali continues to serve as a mentor and advocate for innovation and leadership among Pacific youth. His journey underlines that with perseverance, vision, and community spirit, the seeds of humble beginnings can grow into substantial contributions to society.
