Former Minister Faces Bench Warrant if He Misses Court Again

Spread the love

A court may issue a bench warrant for Kalaveti Ravu, the former fisheries and forestry minister, if he does not attend the next scheduled court date. This warning follows the appearance of his co-accused, Tekata Toaisi, who is the ministry’s regional northern manager. During the hearing in Suva, Toaisi was represented by Joji Cakau, who stepped in on behalf of Lavi Rokoika, Ravu’s current legal counsel.

Cakau explained that Ravu was unable to attend the court session due to a work commitment in Nadi. However, state prosecutor Lavenia Ravuikadavu noted that she was not made aware of this absence beforehand. She requested a short mention date, indicating that if Ravu fails to appear, a bench warrant is likely to be issued.

The former minister faces allegations of interfering with a lawful ministerial investigation concerning the illegal trade of beche-de-mer, a banned species. Toaisi is charged with assisting Ravu in this alleged misconduct that occurred between July and August of the previous year. The charges have been sanctioned by the Fijian Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Both Ravu and Toaisi have had their bail extended, with the case now adjourned until January 21.

This situation highlights the importance of accountability among public officials, as well as the ongoing efforts to combat illegal wildlife trade. The upcoming court proceedings may serve as a crucial moment for reform and integrity within government practices.
