Former Fijian journalist Charlie Charters is currently under detention as he faces allegations of aiding a whistleblower connected to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). His legal counsel, Seforan Fatiaki, revealed that Charters is being investigated under Section 45 of the Crimes Act 2009.

Charters is reported to have been approached at Nadi International Airport with a proposal that would have permitted him to continue his journey to Sydney. However, he deemed the conditions of the arrangement unacceptable, stating it was not agreeable to “any right-thinking citizen.” This refusal led to his subsequent arrest.

Fatiaki indicated that requests for bail to allow Charters to return home were denied by authorities, who informed them that Charters would be held overnight and presented before the court the following Monday. Charters spent the night at the FICAC office in Suva and is expected to face questioning today prior to his court appearance.

Notably, despite the serious nature of the situation, Charters has acknowledged the professionalism of the FICAC officers involved in the investigation, commending their considerate and attentive approach. Additionally, he has expressed appreciation for the support and concern he has received from the public during this challenging time.

This unfolding situation underscores the ongoing battle against corruption in Fiji, highlighting the complexities surrounding whistleblowing and the legal implications involved. As investigations continue, Charters’ experience serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between whistleblower protection and accountability within public institutions.
