Nadi’s Andrews Primary School has served as an evacuation center following severe flooding in the region three days ago. While 190 evacuees have been cleared to return home, five families have expressed a desire to remain for an additional day due to high water levels still affecting their residences.
Most of the evacuees are families from low-lying areas such as Nawaijikuma and Nawakalevu settlements in Nawaka. Nadi District Officer Alifereti Abenisiga has instructed all evacuees to vacate the school by 3 PM the previous day. Evacuee Veveni Waqamasinika highlighted that the five families are particularly concerned about potential rainfall, prompting their request to stay longer.
Despite their concerns, all evacuees, including those who requested an extension, are expected to leave the shelter. Waqamasinika also mentioned the support received during their time at the center, especially from local religious groups and organizations, including the Muslim community, Hare Krishna, the People’s Alliance party in Nadi, Frenzco Beverage Limited, the South Pacific Foundation, and various NGOs.
This situation underscores the resilience of the community coming together in challenging times, showcasing the strength of unity and cooperation in the recovery process post-disaster.
