Initially, Veresa Valemei, the NHS long-distance runner, secured the top position in the race held on Thursday night, outpacing Peni Bulikiobo from Jai Narayan College, the reigning champion. Despite Valemei’s victory, he was not presented with the gold medal during the award ceremony due to a protest from JNC, alleging that Valemei had stepped out of bounds during the race.
The controversy was addressed by track referee Chris Waqa, who, after reviewing the race footage and photo finishes provided by Fiji Broadcasting Corporation, initially awarded the gold to Bulikiobo. However, following an official complaint from Nakasi High School’s management, the decision was overturned.
