Isoa Kaloumaira, the chairperson of the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), highlighted the advantages that young athletes today enjoy, particularly the opportunity to showcase their talents on national television. This statement came during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between FBC and the Fiji Secondary School Athletics Association (FSSAA) aimed at broadcasting upcoming Zone competitions and the three-day Fiji Finals live on FBC Sports.
Kaloumaira, reflecting on his experiences as a young athlete, emphasized the importance of live coverage, noting that today’s athletes have access to resources and visibility that were not available in the past. He remarked, “For most of us sitting around here, we did go through this but that was before all these things came on board – we were in the early days, so students nowadays are quite fortunate.” This kind of exposure is seen as beneficial not only for athletes in Fiji but also for those in the diaspora who wish to remain connected to their roots.
Building on sentiments shared by counterparts in previous initiatives, Marika Uluinaceva, President of the FSSAA, emphasized that live broadcasts could inspire young athletes while also enabling better interaction with family and alumni who cannot physically attend events. This initiative is viewed as a critical opportunity for athletes to demonstrate their talents and could potentially attract the attention of scouts looking for new talent.
As anticipation builds for the National Championship Coca-Cola Games scheduled for April 24-26 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, fans are looking forward to extensive coverage on FBC Sports. This event is seen as pivotal for emphasizing community support for school sports, thereby nurturing a culture of athletic excellence in Fiji.
The enthusiasm surrounding this partnership reflects a commitment to uplifting the determination and skills of Fijian youth through sports. Such initiatives not only foster athletic talent but also reinforce community bonds and celebrate the rich culture of Fiji.
