Fiji’s agricultural sector is facing significant challenges, as highlighted by Nadi Chamber of Commerce President Lawrence Kumar, who emphasizes the country’s heavy financial burden due to the importation of fruits and vegetables. Kumar points out that despite the vast potential of Fiji’s fertile land, much of it remains untapped, hindering national economic growth.

He argues that the lack of attention and investment in agriculture has resulted in a reliance on imported produce. “We have so much productive land in this country, yet we’re importing certain vegetables from abroad – the reason is we are not enhancing our agriculture sector,” Kumar stated. He believes that by prioritizing agricultural development, Fiji could capitalize on its land’s fertility to significantly boost income levels.

Kumar is advocating for a comprehensive analysis of the agricultural sector to direct focused support and investments, urging stakeholders to recognize its critical role in the economy. He is hopeful that with the right strategies, Fiji can reverse its current trajectories.

In response, the government asserts that the agriculture sector is indeed gaining traction. Minister for Finance Esrom Immanuel highlights ongoing efforts including increased investments and enhanced partnerships, which are seen as essential to the industry’s growth. The latest report from the Ministry of Agriculture indicates that Fiji spent approximately $597 million on imported agricultural products in the first half of 2024, while total agricultural exports amounted to $386.8 million, showcasing a significant gap that needs to be addressed.

As the government takes steps to strengthen agriculture, there is optimism that with targeted measures and a commitment to leveraging its natural resources, Fiji can enhance its food security and economic resilience.
