The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Fiji is now tasked with the critical job of identifying individuals, including politicians, businesspeople, chiefs, and religious leaders, who were either involved in or supported past coups. This obligation was emphasized by the Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, during a recent Parliament session, where he passionately conveyed the need for transparency and truth.

The Fiji TRC Bill 2024 was successfully passed in Parliament with 33 votes in favor and 15 against. The commission has been granted the authority to summons relevant individuals, which is crucial for ensuring that those associated with coups can share their narratives.

Mr. Seruiratu underscored the importance of accountability among political figures and mentioned his previous calls for identifying those responsible for influencing former military personnel during the court martial in 2004. He emphasized that the effectiveness of the TRC relies significantly on its ability to summon key individuals to contribute to the truth-telling process.

The TRC is overseen by a committee chaired by Sashi Kiran, the Assistant Minister for Women, who confirmed that the commission has the power to summon those implicated in coup activities. The committee consists of several assistant ministers representing various sectors.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka noted that the TRC Bill was developed following extensive consultations with both victims and perpetrators of past political events, receiving considerable support across different demographics. He expressed optimism that the TRC would foster healing and social harmony, facilitating a space for truth-telling from survivors of political turmoil.

As the TRC moves forward, it holds the potential to address historical grievances and assist in the establishment of a more united and reconciled Fiji. The commitment shown by the government and opposition members reflects a shared desire for progress, making this a hopeful step toward healing and understanding within the nation.

The establishment of the TRC is a significant movement towards acknowledging the past and working collaboratively towards a more transparent and reconciled future, indicating a strong commitment to fostering trust within the community.
