Tolu Young, a rising star in Fijian swimming, recently made headlines for setting a new national record in the 50m freestyle at the Australian National Swimming Trials. Young clocked an impressive time of 22.15 seconds, surpassing his previous record of 22.29 seconds, which he had achieved earlier during this competitive season.

At the Trials, Young showcased his talent against formidable opponents, finishing fifth in the heats, closely following world-leading Australian swimmer Cam McEvoy. Although the A-final was exclusive to Australian competitors, Young made a strong impression in the B-final by claiming victory with his record performance.

His remarkable time positions him well on the global swimming stage, as it would have ranked him fifth in Australia, first in New Zealand, eighth in the USA, and third in Canada, signaling Fiji’s growing presence in competitive swimming. Young has already qualified for the upcoming 2025 World Championships in Singapore, making this event a pivotal step in his preparations.

Young trains diligently in the U.S. and Australia, attributing his success to the unwavering support from Fiji Aquatics, his dedicated coaching staff, and his family. His continued progress not only highlights his individual capabilities but also brings attention to Fiji’s emerging talent in the sport.

This achievement is particularly significant, as it reflects a positive shift for Fiji in the realms of international swimming. With Young’s determination and excellence, he serves as an inspiration for future generations of athletes, fostering a culture of ambition and hard work in Fiji’s sports community.
