The Telecommunications Authority of Fiji (TAF) has entered into a significant Universal Service Obligation agreement with Lightspeed Fiji, aimed at providing reliable internet access to 24 underserved communities within the Tailevu region. This initiative underscores the Government’s strong commitment to narrowing the digital divide and ensuring that rural and remote areas of Fiji receive equitable access to internet services.
The project is anticipated to benefit around 2,400 individuals, enhancing connectivity and digital accessibility for families in these areas. Minister for Communications, Ioane Naivalurua, emphasized that establishing reliable internet services will remove long-existing barriers, fostering opportunities for growth and positively impacting the lives of rural families.
TAF Chair, David Eyre, highlighted that this partnership prioritizes inclusive development, focusing on improved access to essential services. Recently, TAF engaged with the Tailevu Provincial Council to discuss community preparedness and clarify the operational model for the service delivery. During these discussions, the focus was placed on how the managed Wi-Fi network will function and contribute to long-term development in the region.
Lightspeed Fiji expressed enthusiasm for collaborating in this national initiative, recognizing the importance of delivering meaningful digital infrastructure that can transform these communities. Overall, this project represents a hopeful step toward fostering digital inclusion and enhancing the quality of life for those in rural Fiji.
