Taekwondo, a dynamic martial art that combines physical prowess with mental discipline, has deep roots in Fiji, where it is often introduced to children at a young age. National coach Neelu Nand, who operates the Civic Taekwondo Academy in Suva, reflects on his journey in this sport, inspired largely by his mother who encouraged him to start training in the 1980s. His academy began with just four students, and over the years, it has grown significantly, producing several noteworthy athletes, including an Olympian and a competitor at the Junior World Championships.
In recent years, including during the COVID-19 pandemic, Nand adapted his teaching methods, shifting to online classes to ensure continued training for his students. This innovation has allowed many young athletes to advance and achieve new belt levels, demonstrating the adaptability and resilience of both coaches and students in the face of challenges.
Recently, the excitement was palpable during a training session at the Patel Samaj Hall in Toorak, where around 50 to 60 young practitioners engaged in various exercises and sparring sessions. Nand emphasizes a supportive teaching approach, ensuring that new students learn the fundamentals thoroughly, aided by experienced senior black belts who foster motivation and guidance.
In light of recent successes at the Pacific Games and the increased interest in Taekwondo as a result of Fiji’s presence in the Olympics, Nand is optimistic about the future of the sport. He is currently preparing students for the upcoming Fiji Taekwondo President’s Cup and the Oceania Taekwondo Union’s referees and coaches courses. These events not only serve as competitions but also as opportunities for growth and skill development for young athletes.
Overall, the ongoing engagement in Taekwondo fosters not just athletic skill but also discipline and personal growth among the youth, promising a bright future for the sport in Fiji. The platform provided through these tournaments can inspire the next generation of competitors and contribute positively to the community’s sporting landscape.
