Fiji’s Hansel McCaig has achieved a remarkable feat by setting a new national record in the men’s 100 meters medley with a time of 57.31 seconds at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary. His outstanding performance highlights his status as a Pacific Games gold medallist and brings pride to the Fijian swimming community.

McCaig was part of a three-member Fijian swimming delegation at the championships, alongside Marseleima Moss and David Young, who is based in the U.S. Notably, Young also made waves by setting a national record in the men’s 50m butterfly event during the competition.

In another significant development, Fiji Swimming’s president, Lucy Erasito, and Eugene Panuve presented a strategic plan to World Aquatics aimed at guiding Fiji’s swimming federation for the upcoming quadrennial period. This plan emerged from a nine-month collaboration through a mentorship program with the International Federation, designed to align Fiji’s objectives with global swimming trends.

A workshop with stakeholders was instrumental in refining the organization’s visions, missions, and values, ensuring the federation’s goals are robust and forward-thinking. Fiji Swimming successfully met its obligations to World Aquatics and gleaned valuable insights on effective planning and collaboration, learning from the experiences of other national federations, regardless of their size.

A statement from Fiji Swimming expressed gratitude to both the previous and current boards for their foundational work and direction. The organization is committed to prioritizing their athletes’ success above all else, fostering a united effort to advance Fijian swimming on the international stage.

This positive momentum in Fijian swimming not only showcases the talent of its athletes but also signifies a dedicated effort towards enhancing the sport at the national level. With these initiatives and achievements, the future of swimming in Fiji appears bright and full of potential.
