The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) has announced a significant additional payment of $5.00 per tonne, fully funded by the Government, which is set to be disbursed to sugarcane growers before the end of May 2025. This payment is intended to provide farmers with extra support as they prepare for the upcoming 2025 harvesting season, emphasizing the government’s commitment to the sugarcane industry.

FSC Board Chairman Nitya Reddy remarked that this timely support will directly benefit farmers, alleviating some financial pressure as they gear up for the forthcoming season. This additional payment comes on top of the fourth scheduled cane payment of $17.03 per tonne, which will be issued on May 23, 2025. Together, these payments will raise the total compensation for the 2024 sugarcane season to an impressive $86.66 per tonne, exceeding the government’s guaranteed price of $85.00 per tonne.

Reddy highlighted the FSC’s dedication to ensuring farmers receive fair returns, stating, “Paying more than the guaranteed price shows that we’re striving to exceed expectations.” This reflects an ongoing trend of financial support for sugarcane farmers, particularly amidst the challenges posed by climate fluctuations and market conditions that have historically affected production.

Moreover, the FSC has confirmed the start dates for the 2025 crushing season: the Lautoka Mill will begin on June 11, followed by the Labasa Mill on June 17, and the Rarawai Mill on June 24. This detailed planning is crucial for helping farmers prepare effectively.

These developments resonate with a broader effort to bolster the agricultural sector in Fiji and reinforce the resilience of sugarcane growers. With consistent governmental support, these initiatives inspire a hopeful outlook for the sustainability of Fiji’s sugar industry, enabling farmers to continue investing in their operations and adapting to changing conditions.

The financial landscape for sugarcane farmers is improving, demonstrating an encouraging trajectory for the community as they work through economic difficulties together.
