Fiji’s Rugby World Cup Dream: A Blend of Youth and Experience Awaits

France-based flanker Makarita Baleinadogo, an Elite 1 champion, is being considered by Vodafone Fijiana XVs head coach Ioan Cunningham as they prepare for the upcoming Women’s Rugby World Cup. Cunningham has confirmed that he is in touch with Baleinadogo, who currently plays for Les Lionnes du Stade Bordelais in France, and he acknowledged her eligibility to compete for Fiji.

With just two months left until the World Cup, Cunningham expressed confidence that he will have 90% of his final squad in place next month, following their Test match against the United States on July 20. The Women’s Rugby World Cup is scheduled to take place in England from August 22 to September 27.

Cunningham noted that there has been a surge of interest from several overseas-based players, alongside local talents, adding that today’s match against Manusina (Samoa) in the Oceania Championship serves as a critical opportunity for these athletes to demonstrate their capabilities. He underscored his intent to evaluate players both within and outside of the current squad, as well as those from the sevens team, to ensure a strong lineup for the World Cup.

To emphasize their current priorities, Cunningham has announced the Fijiana XV Match 23 squad for their upcoming clash. This lineup includes a blend of seasoned players and promising newcomers, such as 17-year-old lock Carletta Yee, who is making her debut after an impressive rise through the ranks.

Samoa has proven to be a tough opponent, defeating Fiji in past encounters, making this match a significant benchmark for the team as they prepare for the World Cup.

Cunningham expressed optimism regarding the increasing interest in women’s rugby in Fiji and highlighted the positive impact of having players from various locations eager to contribute to the team’s success. The combination of local and overseas talent reflects a community coming together to support and elevate women’s rugby on a global stage, shining a hopeful light on the future of the sport.

The team’s dynamic approach, combining young talent with experienced veterans, holds promise for exciting performances ahead and solidifies their commitment to inspiring future generations of female athletes in Fiji.
