The Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) is set to strengthen its commitment to maintaining a drug-free environment in sports by introducing weekly drug testing procedures in both the Extra Supermarket Premier League and the Extra Senior League. Starting this weekend, each team will undergo a total of four drug tests per week.
Fiji FA Chief Executive Mohammed Yusuf emphasized the necessity of this initiative following evidence from recent tournaments, including the BIC Fiji FACT, where 90 drug tests were conducted and four players tested positive for prohibited substances. In order to enforce this new policy effectively, the Fiji FA Medical Team will be stationed at two randomly selected match venues each week to conduct the same testing procedures. This move reinforces the association’s firm stance against drug use, as any players who fail to cooperate with the testing will face consequences equivalent to a positive result.
This new initiative aligns with the ongoing efforts highlighted during previous tournaments. Just before the BIC Fiji FACT, the Fiji FA announced plans for alcohol testing as well, acknowledging the potential for irresponsible behavior amongst players during events. This comprehensive approach aims to protect athletes’ health and uphold the integrity of the sport, fostering a fair competition environment.
The urgency of these measures reflects rising concerns about substance abuse among athletes in Fiji. Recent statistics showed alarming increases in drug use, with 21 players testing positive during the last FMF Inter District Championship. In light of these challenges, the Fiji FA’s dedication to both testing and educating players about the risks of drug use signifies a hopeful direction for the future of sports in the region.
With ongoing efforts to create a supportive environment and educate young athletes through awareness programs, the Fiji FA is not just focused on punitive measures, but the overall health and well-being of their players, encouraging accountability and responsible choices in sports.
