Two tragic road fatalities occurred in Fiji’s Southern Division yesterday, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety in the region.
The first incident took place in the early morning hours near Naisogo Settlement in Colo-I-Suva, where a man in his 30s was discovered after what is suspected to be a hit-and-run. Despite being rushed to Colonial War Memorial Hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. A suspect, also in his 30s, has been arrested, and authorities have seized his vehicle for forensic analysis as investigations continue.
The second fatality involved a woman in her 50s who suffered injuries in a crash on Queens Road. She was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her husband, who reportedly lost control and collided with a lamppost. The woman was also taken to CWM Hospital but sadly did not survive, while her husband remains in critical condition.
Fiji’s road death toll now stands at 20, a slight increase from 19 during the same period last year, which raises concerns about the safety and awareness among drivers. While these incidents are deeply saddening, recent statistics indicate there may be positive trends in overall road safety efforts. Ongoing campaigns aimed at improving driver behavior and community vigilance are crucial in preventing such tragedies in the future.
The community is encouraged to prioritize road safety and make informed, responsible decisions while driving to foster a safer environment for all road users.
