Isoa Koroinawai, a driven 19-year-old from Vuna, Taveuni, is pursuing his dream of playing for Fiji’s top rugby teams, the Fijian Drua or Flying Fijians. As a proud member of the SportsWorld Fiji under-20 team, he is gearing up for the upcoming Oceania U20 Rugby Championship, which will take place at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka from May 26 to June 11.
Koroinawai, who has always had a passion for rugby, sees his place on the Fiji U20 team as a monumental step in his journey. His development through Queen Victoria School, where he participated in the U18 Schoolboys team and the Fiji Warriors, has given him invaluable experiences. “Preparation has been going well; it’s great to get to know each other with the boys and work as a team,” he shared, highlighting the unity among his teammates as they train together.
His ambitions extend beyond just representing the U20 team. “My dream as a child is to reach somewhere good in my rugby journey,” he emphasized, expressing his determination to achieve greater heights in the sport. He also acknowledges the support from his parents in the village, reinforcing his commitment to make them proud.
The SportsWorld Fiji under-20 team also boasts a diverse squad, including 11 overseas-based players such as Charlie Tagicakibau and Vaimoe Koroi, who bring a wealth of experience to the lineup. This combination of local and international talent is expected to enhance the team’s dynamic as they head into competition.
As Fiji prepares for the championship, their strategic focus on harnessing both local and overseas talent embodies hope for the future of Fijian rugby. With the rigorous training and support from the coaching staff, there’s a shared optimism that Fiji’s under-20 squad will shine on the international stage and pave the way for even greater success in rugby.
