Fiji’s Police Force Braces for Change Amid Rising Security Threats

Fiji is facing an evolving landscape of security threats that are outpacing the capabilities of its law enforcement agencies. Minister for Policing, Ioane Naivalurua, has addressed these challenges, emphasizing the need for proactive leadership within the Fiji Police Force. He insists that instead of merely reacting to emerging threats such as cybercrime, artificial intelligence risks, and climate change pressures, the police must be at the forefront of driving change.

Speaking at the Senior Officers Seminar in Lami, Naivalurua underscored the importance of police leadership as a cornerstone of national stability. The seminar served to review the Fiji Police Force’s Uplift reforms and draft a new strategic plan for 2025-2029, fostering a shift in how Fiji addresses its security challenges.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that internal cohesion is essential for the success of their initiatives. He highlighted that the AFP-backed Uplift program aims to enhance operational effectiveness through internal development, a key element in restoring public confidence in the police force.

Notably, past articles have pointed to rising crime rates, with reports indicating a 26 percent increase for January 2025, pointing to the immediacy of the situation. The Uplift initiative focuses on core values like integrity and leadership and seeks to create a police force that is not only accountable but also trusted by the community. The collaboration between the Fiji Police Force and international partners like the Australian Federal Police sets a firm foundation for a significant reform movement aimed at improving law enforcement effectiveness and community relations.

These proactive measures convey hope for a more secure future for Fiji, encouraging a renewed public trust in law enforcement as the police adapt to contemporary challenges with innovative strategies. Emphasizing close cooperation with local communities, there is optimism that these reforms will lead to a safer environment where public safety is enhanced.
