Elder abuse, neglect, loneliness, and suicide among seniors in Fiji are pressing issues that the government aims to tackle through legislative and policy changes this year, as emphasized by Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran. In her inaugural address to Parliament, she underscored the need for a comprehensive approach to protect Fiji’s aging population, many of whom have been adversely affected by neglect as their families seek better opportunities abroad.
Kiran acknowledged the contributions of older individuals to nation-building, expressing concern over the reports of elder abuse and the alarming rates of suicide in this vulnerable group. She announced plans to review the National Ageing Policy and the Council of Older Persons Act 2012 to better protect the rights of seniors. This initiative aligns with discussions from earlier this year, where alarming statistics revealed 19 suicides among seniors from January to August, underlining the urgency of community support for this demographic.
In addition to legislative changes, Kiran proposed the establishment of safe spaces across the country, designed to combat loneliness among seniors. Drawing inspiration from the late Sir Satya Bali, who pioneered the Ba Senior Citizens Centre in 2001, the ministry plans to create similar spaces in every district where older citizens can gather, network, and access necessary services, including counseling.
Furthermore, collaboration with local leaders, district advisory councils, and faith-based organizations will be essential in fostering a supportive network for older individuals. The government is keen to address the emotional and mental well-being of seniors, as studies suggest that regular interactions help mitigate incidents of elder abuse and loneliness.
This proactive commitment highlights a hopeful direction for the future, aiming to nurture a society that values and supports its older citizens. By collectively addressing the challenges faced by seniors, there lies a significant opportunity to enhance their quality of life, thereby reinforcing the fabric of community and family unity throughout Fiji.
