Policing Minister Ioane Naivalurua announced in Parliament that the initial draft of the Counter-Narcotics Bill has been completed. The bill, approved by the Cabinet, is designed to strengthen the roles and operations of the Counter-Narcotics Bureau.
Mr. Naivalurua mentioned that consultations to discuss the draft Bill will begin in the coming weeks. He expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Counter-Narcotics Bureau since its establishment nearly a year ago, acknowledging the challenges in combating drug-related crimes but affirming a collective commitment to a unified strategy against drug syndicates.
He highlighted the importance of safeguarding Fiji’s borders and enhancing interagency collaboration to deter international drug operations. The Minister recognized the support of the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces in the urgency to address these issues and lauded joint operations focused on dismantling drug activities in high-risk regions across the country.
The Minister reiterated that the public is increasingly concerned about drug-related issues, seeking effective governmental responses. He characterized the drug trade and its associated crime syndicates as threats that exploit communities and undermine societal integrity.
This upcoming legislative framework is viewed as a crucial step in the fight against drugs—a commitment echoed in previous discussions led by Assistant Minister for Home Affairs, Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure. Vakalalabure had previously highlighted the need for robust legislation during workshops concerning the Counter Narcotics Bureau Bill, emphasizing the risks posed by drug trafficking to national security and community well-being.
The development of this Bill showcases the government’s determination to enhance public safety and build trust in the nation’s security framework. Implementing an organized, strategic response to the drug crisis signals hopeful progress in addressing one of Fiji’s pressing social challenges.
