The Fiji Law Society has announced that Janet Mason’s role as counsel assisting the Commission of Inquiry (COI), which investigated the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), has formally concluded. William Wylie Clarke, the president of the Law Society, stated that the commission’s report has been submitted and is now open to public discussion, although he noted it has generated a mix of reactions.

Clarke pointed out that Mason should gracefully accept any criticism following her involvement, emphasizing that public figures are often subjected to scrutiny. He mentioned that commissions of inquiry are uncommon in Fiji and that established standards for the conduct of their members post-engagement are lacking.

Mason has responded to claims regarding her professional conduct, which have been called into question after a recent misconduct finding against her by the New Zealand Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal— a decision she is currently appealing. Additionally, significant allegations have arisen concerning her application for a practicing certificate in Fiji, leading to concerns about how her case was handled by the Legal Practitioners Unit.

In light of these events, while some tensions exist between Mason and the Fiji Law Society, there is hope that the overall inquiry into Malimali’s appointment will lead to substantial reforms aimed at enhancing accountability and transparency across Fiji’s governance framework. Stakeholders are optimistic that these developments may not only clarify the particular allegations at hand but also foster a culture of ethical governance within the country.

As the situation progresses, it serves as a pivotal moment for Fiji, highlighting the necessity for maintaining high standards of integrity and professionalism within its political and legal systems. The inquiry represents an opportunity to address specific issues while reinforcing public trust in government operations.
