Fiji’s Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, has recently highlighted significant enhancements in the services offered by the Legal Aid Commission over the past 10 to 15 years. During a parliamentary session on December 3, 2024, focused on the “Consolidated Review Report of the Legal Aid Commission 2018 to 2023,” Turaga commended the commission’s efforts to improve access to legal support, particularly for individuals residing in remote areas.
Turaga pointed out the commission’s dedicated outreach work, which includes legal aid professionals traveling to islands such as Lau, Lomaiviti, and Kadavu, as well as hosting specialized sessions in Rotuma. These initiatives have allowed many legal cases to be addressed directly in communities, eliminating the necessity for individuals to make long journeys to Suva for legal assistance.
Despite these improvements, Turaga raised concerns about the disparity in compensation for Legal Aid lawyers compared to their colleagues at the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). He mentioned that Legal Aid lawyers handle a significantly heavier caseload, and suggested implementing a bonus system to adequately compensate them for their hard work and the unique challenges they face, which are often not encountered by private practitioners.
Discussions on the need for fair compensation for Legal Aid lawyers have been prominent in previous articles, emphasizing that many of these professionals manage over a hundred cases each year. This ongoing dialogue reflects broader discussions on legal reform in Fiji, underscoring the necessity of providing sufficient support for those working in the justice system.
Looking ahead, there is optimism regarding the government’s efforts to tackle these critical concerns. By improving compensation and working conditions for Legal Aid lawyers, Fiji can enhance its legal framework, ultimately benefiting citizens by increasing access to justice nationwide. This forward-thinking approach reinforces the government’s dedication to ensuring that every individual has the legal assistance they require, with a particular focus on protecting the rights of people in underserved communities.
