Fifteen presidents from various netball associations across Fiji have come together to request a Special General Meeting (SGM) following their motion of no confidence in the current executive committee of Netball Fiji (NF). In a formal letter to NF President RubyAnn Sorovaki, the group voiced serious concerns about issues such as nepotism, the Fiji Pearls’ disappointing global ranking of 16th, and a noted lack of professionalism and transparency within the organization. They are urging two key motions: one for the executive committee to resign in light of these concerns, and another to establish an interim committee for a period of four months to address and rectify the ongoing issues.
This letter has garnered signatures from presidents of several local netball associations, including those from Suva, Nadi, Lautoka, and Ba, fulfilling the requirements set out in the NF constitution. This collective action reflects a significant movement among local leaders pushing for greater accountability and enhanced governance within the sport.
In response to the letter, Netball Fiji acknowledged the issues raised and confirmed its commitment to follow constitutional processes concerning the SGM. The organization expressed its dedication to maintaining transparency and good governance, and it aims to work collaboratively with associated districts and the council to tackle these concerns in a fair manner. NF reassured its members that all issues raised will be addressed with adherence to the governing principles, prioritizing stakeholders’ best interests.
This development comes on the heels of discussions held during NF’s recent Annual General Meeting (AGM), where representatives emphasized the essential need for constitutional reviews and improved communication among districts. The upcoming SGM is seen as a crucial opportunity for reform, and there is a strong sentiment that it can foster a more democratic environment that promotes collaboration and inclusivity.
As Fiji’s netball community faces this critical juncture, there is cautiously optimistic feedback regarding the revitalization and growth of the sport. Efforts to enhance local competitions and create pathways for player development suggest a real commitment to nurturing a robust netball culture in the region, with stakeholders hopeful that the SGM will spark meaningful discussions and usher in positive changes that benefit the future of netball in Fiji.
