The Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, has voiced concerns regarding Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s decision not to publicly release the Commission of Inquiry (COI) report on Barbara Malimali, the suspended Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) commissioner. In a letter addressed to Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua, Kalouniwai conveyed the military’s position on the matter.

Minister Tikoduadua confirmed that he has received the commander’s letter and is currently reviewing its contents. He emphasized that it is his responsibility to address the concerns raised by Kalouniwai and stated that he plans to discuss these issues with Prime Minister Rabuka before making any further comments. Tikoduadua noted that the Prime Minister and President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu had already articulated their stance regarding the report’s confidentiality, suggesting it might be premature to release it as it could potentially affect ongoing investigations.

The Prime Minister has previously maintained that the report may have implications for the Fiji Police Force and FICAC’s ongoing operations. He underlined that the decision to withhold the report is not merely bureaucratic; the intent is to avoid jeopardizing potential future investigations.

This situation becomes even more critical against the backdrop of increased national dialogue surrounding governance, accountability, and transparency, especially regarding appointments to key positions within the government. Both public and political pressures are mounting to ensure that such inquiries lead to reforms that could bolster public trust in governmental operations.

Amidst these complications, the collective optimism persists that the ongoing discussions surrounding the inquiry could pave the way for significant improvements in governance and further promote ethical standards within Fiji’s political environment. The hope remains that transparency in government operations will enhance accountability and foster a stronger trust between citizens and their leaders, thereby nurturing a healthier political climate in Fiji.
