Fiji secured a nail-biting victory over France in the semifinals of the HSBC Dubai 7s, triumphing 19-17 in a dramatic finish. The match was intense from the get-go, with Fiji’s captain Jeremaia Matana unfortunately sidelined early in the game due to a head injury.

France started strong, gaining momentum and opening the scoring with a try from Liam Delamare at the five-minute mark, although the conversion attempt was missed. Fiji quickly responded, equalizing just a minute later as Kavekini Tanivanuakula crossed the try line, followed by a successful conversion from Filipe Sauturaga that propelled Fiji into the lead.

As the first half progressed, Fiji further extended their advantage when Sauturaga scored again just after the buzzer, bringing the halftime score to 14-5.

The second half maintained the match’s ferocity, with Fiji determined to defend their lead. However, Fiji’s task became more challenging when Tanivanuakula received a yellow card for a minor infraction. France took advantage of this opportunity, scoring their second try through Jordan Sepho, which was converted by Paulin Riva, putting the score at 14-12 and setting up a thrilling conclusion.

In a twist of fate, Fiji faced increased pressure due to their ill-discipline, allowing France to capitalize on a penalty near Fiji’s line. Victor Hannoun scored in the corner, giving France a brief lead 17-14. In the final moments of the match, Fiji rallied back with Vuiviwa Naduvalo making a stunning sprint to secure the victory with a try, ending the match at 19-17.

This victory not only demonstrates Fiji’s resolve but also highlights their ability to perform under pressure. As they advance to the finals, fans can look forward to their tenacity and skill on full display.
