Fiji’s Hospitality Star Eyes Homecoming Opportunities

Ravinder Dhesi, a Fijian national and the general manager of JW Marriott Gold Coast, has expressed his willingness to return to Fiji if the opportunity arises. This month marks a significant milestone for Dhesi as he celebrates 25 years with the Marriott Group.

Reflecting on his career, Dhesi shared, “I think it would be an exciting opportunity.” He noted that after graduating with a Bachelor of Business degree in Sydney, he never imagined he would become a general manager of a luxury five-star hotel in Australia. He welcomed every opportunity he was presented with throughout his career.

Dhesi’s journey in the hospitality industry began in 1993 when he worked as a graduate accountant and was assigned to conduct an audit for Sheraton Fiji, a location that holds sentimental value for him. His recent visit to the resort was filled with nostalgia, as he was warmly welcomed by staff who remembered him. “When we went for breakfast on Monday morning, everyone was coming and giving me a hug because they can associate that I am a local and have had an element of success in my hospitality career,” he remarked.

He views his journey as not only exciting but hopes it serves as inspiration for fellow Fijians. “I’m young and I think I will still be working for a few more, and it will be in the Marriott chain,” he stated. Dhesi highlighted the large portfolio of Marriott hotels in Fiji and reiterated his eagerness to support local talent in the hospitality sector, emphasizing that Fiji is home to him.
