The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, expressed confidence that the work of the Fiji government can continue despite the dismissal of Attorney General Graham Leung by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Following the findings of the Commission of Inquiry (COI), which deemed Leung’s position untenable, Rabuka acted under constitutional authority to terminate his ministerial duties.

Seruiratu noted that while the government is addressing the recommendations outlined by the COI, he emphasized the importance of transparency by calling for the full report to be made public. He stated, “This is a positive step, but more can still be done,” highlighting that governance should not be hindered by personnel changes as capable individuals remain to ensure the continuity of work.

The COI also led to the suspension of FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali, who will face an investigation by police related to the allegations brought up in the report. Lisiate Fotofili has had his appointment as Deputy Commissioner revoked and will revert to his prior role in the Fiji Judiciary, while Lavi Rokoika steps in as Acting Commissioner for FICAC.

Seruiratu refrained from discussing whether he had approached the Prime Minister about the COI report, noting that as a witness, he is constrained by the inquiry’s directives. Nevertheless, he reiterated his commitment to scrutinizing the actions of the democratic government in his capacity as Leader of the Opposition.

The situation in Fiji highlights a pivotal moment for governance, emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency in public affairs. This series of leadership changes could catalyze further reforms, ultimately paving the way for a political landscape that better aligns with the aspirations of the Fijian people toward integrity and trust in governance. The ongoing discussions and actions illustrate a hopeful approach to restoring public confidence in governmental institutions.
