The Fiji Sports Council is gearing up for the Grassroots Under-21 sevens tournament, showcasing the skills of young rugby, netball, and volleyball athletes in Rakiraki. This year’s event, scheduled for July 25-26 at the Nayauraba Sports Ground, will feature 24 rugby teams and 12 teams each for netball and volleyball, representing communities from Ra, Tavua, and Ba.

Emosi Lasaqa, the communications officer for the Fiji Sports Council, highlighted the vibrant community engagement surrounding the tournament, likening the atmosphere in Rakiraki to an electric buzz as local teams prepare to battle for victory. “Villages and communities are rallying behind their local teams, and there’s excitement over spotting future stars of Fiji Rugby. Many are calling this the battle of the next generation,” Lasaqa expressed.

The competition promises to be intense, particularly with Ba River aiming to defend its championship title. The event not only provides a platform for displaying talent but also fosters community spirit and promotes healthy lifestyles among the youth.

This initiative aligns with the Fiji Sports Council’s broader efforts to support grassroots development across various regions, thereby encouraging young athletes to pursue their dreams in sports. It marks an important step in nurturing the next generation of players who may one day represent Fiji on an international stage.

Through such events, the hope is that sports will continue to unite and uplift communities, instilling a sense of pride and creating pathways for local youth to engage in athletic pursuits. The anticipation surrounding the tournament reflects Fiji’s commitment to fostering talent and promoting a healthy sporting culture.
