Two weeks into the Athletics camp organized by the Fiji Sports Council, the primary goal remains the cultivation of future sports talents. Despite the post-Christmas festivities and the upcoming New Year of 2025, young athletes are showing remarkable dedication to honing their skills and improving their performances.

The camp, currently taking place at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva and running until January 21, has a mission to develop disciplined, skilled, and mentally resilient athletes. National athletics coach Pio Qerewaqa has praised the commitment exhibited by these youngsters, noting that their consistent attendance amid holiday distractions reflects their determination to excel in sports.

“These kids are showing incredible focus,” Qerewaqa stated. “Even with all the distractions of the holidays, they are here every day, ready to learn and grow.”

In addition to refining athletic techniques and nurturing mental strength, Qerewaqa emphasized the vital role parents play in their children’s athletic journeys. He urged that it is not only about transporting them to training sessions, but also being actively engaged in their development.

“Parents are a big part of an athlete’s success,” he articulated, adding that the program includes sessions designed for both parents and coaches. Topics covered in these sessions include nutrition, recovery, and emotional support strategies for young athletes. Qerewaqa explained how parental involvement boosts their children’s self-esteem and motivation, driving them to perform better.

With three weeks remaining in the camp, he encouraged parents to maintain their involvement as their children lay the groundwork for future accomplishments. “These athletes are putting in the effort, and they need the same commitment from home,” he noted.

As the year draws to a close, this athletics camp stands as a powerful reminder of the importance of focus, dedication, and support in striving for success, both in sports and in life.

This article highlights not only the hard work of young athletes but also the collaborative effort needed from parents and coaches. Such initiatives can foster a promising environment for nurturing the next generation of sports stars, ultimately benefiting both the athletes and the broader sports community.
