Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad recently met with Pio Smith, the Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), during the High-Level Regional Consultation on Financing for Development in Asia and the Pacific, which took place in Bangkok.
In their discussions, DPM Prasad expressed gratitude towards UNFPA for its essential role in the creation of Fiji’s inaugural National Population Policy. This policy is designed to address shifting demographics and ensure that population dynamics are in harmony with the country’s development objectives. The implementation of this policy is anticipated to significantly influence Fiji’s future growth trajectory positively.
Furthermore, UNFPA is optimistic about Fiji’s upcoming participation in the 58th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) scheduled for April 2025, indicating a commitment to ongoing collaboration.
This meeting highlights the proactive measures being taken by the Fijian government in partnership with international organizations to foster sustainable development and improve population management strategies. Such initiatives are crucial for aligning national priorities with demographic shifts and can lead to enhanced socio-economic growth in the future. The focus on comprehensive policies underscores a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s development plans.
