A new career center has been proposed to address the pressing labor shortages in Fiji. Initiated by Natural Waters of Viti Pte Limited, the parent company of FIJI Water, the center will follow a model similar to that established in California. Marigold Moody, the assistant general counsel for the South Pacific, announced the project during the Top Executives Conference 2024 at Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Denarau, emphasizing that this initiative represents a significant investment in the Fijian workforce.
Moody outlined that the career center will focus on skills development to better prepare individuals for employment, particularly in sectors facing a shortage of qualified workers, such as maritime operations. Currently, the company operates around 11 vessels in the Pacific and emphasizes the urgent need for appropriately skilled Pacific Island seafarers.
In light of FIJI Water’s substantial investment of over FJ$140 million to expand operations by approximately 47%, there is a projected demand for a larger workforce over the next decade. To facilitate this growth, the company plans to collaborate with Fiji National University to establish the career center in Suva, targeted for completion by 2025.
Moody shared insights that the career center will not only aim to bridge the skills gap but also focus on creating job-ready candidates through tailored training programs. The initiative intends to involve other members of the manufacturing and marine industry in Fiji, fostering partnerships through an industry council.
This initiative is a promising step towards improving job readiness and addressing skills shortages in critical industries, creating a more sustainable and empowered workforce in Fiji. It reflects a proactive approach to economic development that benefits both businesses and the local community.
By prioritizing education and skill training, this project offers hope for a brighter future for many individuals in Fiji, enabling them to secure meaningful employment in the growing industries.
