Early detection of cancer poses a significant challenge in Fiji, prompting the Fiji Cancer Society (FCS) to emphasize the need for increased health awareness among women. The organization highlights that late-stage cancer diagnoses are associated with poorer survival rates, a worrying trend that affects many young women, including those in medical professions and mothers, who have lost their lives due to delayed diagnoses.
Shweta Kapoor, FCS Program Officer, stressed the importance of early screening, stating, “It can affect any or every individual… once you present late, your survival rate becomes really low.” She urges women to consistently seek healthcare screenings to identify and treat any health issues early with the support provided by the society.
A troubling aspect of the situation is that many cancer cases remain unreported, as some women choose herbal remedies over conventional medicine, which adds complexity to addressing this health issue. In response to these challenges, the FCS is dedicated to offering vital support services to cancer patients by collaborating with various organizations and the Ministry of Health to provide comprehensive care, including home visits and financial assistance.
These efforts build upon previous initiatives aimed at boosting cancer awareness among women, especially in light of alarming statistics from health officials. Reports indicate that around 1,400 new cancer cases are diagnosed each year in Fiji, underscoring both the rising incidence of diagnosis and the urgent need for educational interventions focused on health management.
With ongoing outreach and educational programs, the FCS aspires to empower more women to take control of their health, fostering a culture where regular screenings are commonplace. This proactive approach aims to change the narrative surrounding cancer in Fiji, paving the way for earlier detection, informed health choices, and better health outcomes.
As community members rally around these initiatives, there is optimism that enhanced awareness and proactive strategies will elevate the importance of health and wellness, leading to a brighter future for all Fijians confronting cancer.
