The Fiji Principals Association has announced a significant milestone, having received government funding of $300,000 for the 2025–2026 national budget—the first financial support of its kind in over sixty years. President Vishnu Deo Sharma hailed this development as a turning point for the Association, which has operated without direct support for decades.

Sharma emphasized that this funding is essential for initiating leadership training and development programs tailored for its 180 members. He remarked, “It’s a vote of confidence in school leaders and a clear sign the Government now sees principals as key drivers of education reform.” This sentiment aligns with broader governmental initiatives, which aim to decentralize educational governance and empower school managements across Fiji by allowing them to make crucial financial decisions.

The funding is expected to enhance decision-making at the school level, improve student outcomes, and contribute towards national education goals. This support coincides with the Association’s preparations for its 132nd Annual Conference in Nadi, during which the new funding is slated to influence the creation of impactful training programs and long-term strategies.

In related efforts, the Fijian government has embraced a proactive educational reform agenda. For instance, a landmark budget allocation of $847 million has been designated to the education sector, which includes a significant focus on enhancing the autonomy of school managements in allocating educational grants, thus fostering a more community-centric approach to governance.

As Fiji moves forward with these transformative educational policies, there is hope for a revitalized educational landscape that empowers school leaders, strengthens community involvement, and ultimately enriches the learning experience for students across the nation.
