Fiji’s “Easter on the Park” Initiative: A New Hope for Street Dwellers

A group of 45 street dwellers in Fiji has taken a significant step towards self-improvement through the government’s “Easter on the Park” initiative, led by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Launched recently, this initiative aims to equip some of the nation’s most vulnerable individuals with job-ready skills and long-term support.

Training commenced at the Fiji National University (FNU) Namaka Campus, focusing on vocational skills in three key areas: barbering, tour guiding, and baking. Specifically, 7 participants will learn barbering, 20 are enrolled in tour guiding, and 18 will train in baking and pastry making. These practical skills are designed to enhance their employability and, ultimately, improve their quality of life.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development, which is also working on establishing a safe house for participants to aid their transition into stable living and employment environments. The government has framed this initiative within its broader aim to ensure that no one is left behind in Fiji’s development, emphasizing its commitment to rehabilitation and inclusive growth.

This effort mirrors previous initiatives that have successfully empowered marginalized groups in Fiji, such as those seen with the Australian Pacific Training Coalition. These programs collectively contribute to a narrative of hope and resilience, revealing the transformative power of education and skill development. They offer vulnerable populations a chance to reintegrate into society, pursue employment, and build brighter futures.

By investing in education and community support, initiatives like “Easter on the Park” not only uplift individual participants but also extend their positive impact into the wider community. As the journey of these street dwellers progresses, it serves as a reminder of the potential for meaningful change and growth through structured support and training.
