Military Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai recently convened a meeting with the Fiji Truth & Reconciliation Commission (FTRC) to discuss progress on the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Reconciliation and Restoration Process. The intent of the meeting was to exchange views on the ongoing reconciliation efforts and explore future opportunities for collaboration to enhance the national healing process.
The RFMF emphasized mutual respect and transparency throughout the discussions, demonstrating a commitment to accountability and truth-telling as vital elements of reconciliation. During a comprehensive briefing, the military outlined its structured, two-phase approach to reconciliation, initiated in March 2023. This process focuses on awareness campaigns, community outreach, and truth-telling, integrating Fiji’s cultural and spiritual traditions into its framework.
FTRC Chairperson Marcus Brand praised the RFMF for its courageous initiative in tackling an internal reconciliation process, recognizing that few institutions worldwide embark on such an introspective journey. The FTRC acknowledged the military’s genuine efforts to engage with former service members, community leaders, and survivors, highlighting the importance of inclusivity in this national endeavor.
This collaboration not only fosters stronger ties between the military and the FTRC but also paves the way for broader national reconciliation, addressing the historical traumas affecting Fiji. By nurturing open dialogue and working together, there is a hopeful prospect for healing and unity in the communities affected by past conflicts. It exemplifies a shared commitment to moving forward in a genuinely reconciliatory manner, creating pathways for healing and understanding at a national level.
