The 2025 Suva Darts Association (SDA) Open League kicked off on Monday, featuring 10 teams and over 100 players in one of the most anticipated darts competitions in Fiji. The league will take place every Monday at 7 PM, providing a consistent platform for competition.

Edward Roxburgh, president of the Suva Darts Association, emphasized the significance of the league, noting that it is one of their largest annual events. “This annual event showcases the best players competing against each other,” Roxburgh stated. The league’s format mirrors what players can expect at the South Pacific Darts Championships, serving as a crucial preparation phase for the upcoming SPDC set to be held in the Cook Islands in 2027.

Utilizing an electronic scoring system, the league will adopt a round-robin format. This year, the top four teams will be rewarded with trophies and cash prizes, which Roxburgh highlighted are “bigger and better” than in previous years. Matches are hosted at the Defence Club area of the Fiji Club, with additional games anticipated at the United Club, pending confirmation.

While the number of participating teams remains consistent with last year due to venue constraints, interest in the league continues to grow. The competition is open to players aged 18 and over, although registration has closed; prospective players are welcome to attend Monday games to express their interest in joining club teams. Roxburgh encouraged potential participants to demonstrate their skills, as the league is known for its competitive nature.

Strong contenders this season include the Ono Darts team from Suva and the Titans of Lami, both renowned for their consistent performance in past tournaments. Other teams to keep an eye on are Friends United, WAN Darts, and teams from the Defence Club. Despite many teams remaining the same as previous years, new players have joined the line-ups, promising fresh energy and competition.

In addition to the league, Roxburgh hinted at the upcoming development programs aimed at expanding the sport further in Fiji, indicating a bright future for darts in the nation. As the communitying rally around the sport grows, this event not only fosters competition but builds a supportive network that is hopeful for the evolution of darts in Fiji.
