The Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) has recently completed a Job Evaluation Exercise (JEE), which has resulted in the creation of 81 new positions in various sectors, including administrative, technical, and ranking officer roles. This initiative has been sanctioned by the Cabinet and received parliamentary approval as part of the current national budget.

During a parliamentary update, Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga clarified that the traditional notions of promotions and demotions will no longer be applicable within the organization. Instead, any adjustments in rank will be based on an officer’s transfer, performance, and the specific needs of the organization.

Turaga emphasized the necessity of updating their structure and Human Resources policies, reflecting the inclusion of the new positions over the upcoming three financial years. He pointed out that there had been an ongoing need to adjust the pay structure according to the requirements of the roles, as well as the qualifications and experience of the personnel.

It has been approximately 40 years since the last Job Evaluation Exercise was conducted, making this a significant update for the organization. The new evaluation has allowed for the establishment of clear job descriptions for various officer roles, alongside the development of an updated organizational chart that showcases the new positions — a task that was not undertaken by prior administrations.

This development represents a progressive step towards modernizing the Fiji Corrections Services and ensuring that their structure aligns with current needs and standards. As new posts are introduced, this initiative is set to enhance efficiency and operational effectiveness within the organization.

In summary, the FCS is taking a forward-looking approach to its structure and operations, reflecting a commitment to continual improvement and adapting to contemporary demands. This change is hopeful for both personnel and the efficiency of the entire corrections system.
