Fijian Member of Parliament Lynda Tabuya has reaffirmed the government’s dedication to amending the Constitution to better reflect the wishes of the citizens. Having secured the fourth highest votes in the 2022 General Elections, Tabuya emphasizes that constitutional reform is a critical commitment to her constituents.
In her recent remarks, she noted the efforts made to engage with the Opposition in a bipartisan manner for legislative reform, although she pointed out that these overtures have not been reciprocated. “Bipartisanship was never encouraged during the time when we were in opposition, but this time around we did reach out to the opposition,” she stated, highlighting the ongoing pursuit of constructive political dialogue.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, shared a hopeful outlook regarding constitutional amendments, despite facing challenges when a proposed Amendment Bill did not achieve the required 75 percent majority in Parliament. This bill aimed to tackle significant issues stemming from the 2013 Constitution’s power structure, underscoring the obstacles encountered by the current coalition government.
Kamikamica stressed the importance of collaboration and mutual respect among lawmakers and noted that initial support from four opposition members could hint at future cooperation. He remarked, “We tried hard… I think a lot more members from the other side will move across,” showcasing an optimistic perspective for upcoming discussions.
The commitment to reforming Fiji’s constitutional framework resonates across various political factions, with ongoing efforts to include citizens in the dialogue indicating a hopeful direction towards representation and inclusivity in governance.
This continual push for constitutional reform represents an invaluable chance for Fiji to enhance its democratic processes, uniting its diverse population and fostering collaboration across the political sphere. As discussions unfold, there remains a promise of transformation that can strengthen democracy and embody the collective aspirations of the Fijian people.
