Last night, Parliament successfully enacted the Child Justice Act 2024 and the Fiji Child Care and Protection Act 2024. The Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, emphasized that these new laws mark a significant shift away from outdated perspectives that failed to address high crime rates and neglected children’s rights, paving the way for a safer environment for Fijian children.

According to Minister Tabuya, the Child Justice Act is designed to prevent children charged with crimes from re-offending, guiding them instead toward becoming responsible citizens. She highlighted that the legislation is grounded in research that identifies the factors leading children to interact with the legal system, showcasing a commitment to understanding and addressing the root causes of youth offenses.

A key element of the Act is the increased focus on diversion, coupled with a raise in the age of criminal responsibility. This reform is complemented by the Fiji Child Care and Protection Bill, which together create a robust framework focused on protecting the rights and well-being of children. The Child Care and Protection Act stresses the importance of ensuring that every child grows up in a secure and nurturing environment, free from abuse and neglect.

Minister Tabuya stressed the importance of collaboration among various government agencies, urging her colleagues in the police and justice sectors to adapt their practices in line with the new laws. She called for law enforcement to engage effectively with children and for legal professionals to receive the necessary training to implement the principles of the new Act.

By emphasizing rehabilitation over punishment, the government aims to foster a more supportive landscape for vulnerable youth, inspiring hope for a transformative approach to juvenile justice in Fiji. These legislative changes represent a step toward a brighter future for children in the country.

Overall, the passage of these Acts signifies a pivotal moment in fostering positive societal change, one that prioritizes the welfare of children and addresses the challenges they face, offering a hopeful outlook for the next generation.
