Young boxers showcased their skills during the first day of the Fiji-New Zealand Invitational event, organized by the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association at the Commander Stan Brown Boxing Gym in Walu Bay, Suva. The competition featured 30 bouts, commencing at noon and wrapping up in the early evening.

The atmosphere in the wooden gym was electric, filled with the sounds of punches, ringing bells marking the start and end of fights, and enthusiastic cheers from spectators urging the young athletes on.

Cam Todd, head coach of the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association, expressed his excitement about the high level of engagement and talent among the participants. “I’m really excited. I think Fiji has a bright future in amateur boxing and there’s so much talent,” Todd noted, emphasizing the consistent improvement seen in the young boxers.

Preparation for the bouts included collaborative training sessions with the New Zealand team. Todd also announced upcoming events, mentioning a Golden Glove national competition scheduled for next week, along with ambitious plans for an international outing in the United States and competitions in England for both male and female boxers next year.

The competition is set to continue today at Nausori Primary School, promising more thrilling matches and showcasing the potential of Fiji’s young boxing talent.

This event not only highlights the growing interest in amateur boxing in Fiji but also serves as a stepping stone for young athletes aspiring to reach greater heights in the sport. The collaboration with New Zealand teams and future international competitions further indicates a bright prospect for these promising boxers.
