Fiji is preparing to launch its Building Permits Approval Subsystem by October as part of the businessNOW Fiji program, aimed at modernizing public service delivery and improving business operations. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, provided this update during the Fourth Working Committee Meeting focused on enhancing the Ease of Doing Business.

Kamikamica reported that the system has successfully moved beyond the development phase and is now entering crucial stages of implementation, which includes user acceptance testing, staff training, and pilot runs. He pointed out the successes of the earlier initiative, the Starting a Business Subsystem, which has already led to shorter processing times and increased uptake by users.

During the meeting, Kamikamica emphasized the importance of sustaining momentum and proactive engagement from all agencies involved to ensure readiness for the system’s rollout. He underscored the need for swift legislative backing to prevent delays in system functionality, calling for quick actions on pending Cabinet papers and Gazette publications.

Change management and recognizing the human elements behind this digital transformation were also key topics discussed. Kamikamica reaffirmed that the initiative extends beyond just software and permits, highlighting a comprehensive aim for broader reform across various sectors.

These efforts align with ongoing digital transformation projects in Fiji that have previously streamlined processes like business registration and immigration approvals, demonstrating the government’s commitment to creating a more efficient and business-friendly environment. The increasing focus on automation not only aims to enhance operational efficiencies but also seeks to position Fiji favorably as a destination for domestic and international investment.

This initiative is a hopeful step forward, demonstrating Fiji’s dedication to innovation and economic growth that can ultimately benefit all stakeholders involved. Embracing digital solutions and fostering dialogue with the business community, the Fijian government is taking significant strides towards sustainable development and a robust future economy.
