Fiji’s Battle Against Drugs: The Call for Unity from Churches and Chiefs

Policing Minister Ioane Naivalurua has called for a stronger involvement from both the church and traditional leaders in addressing Fiji’s escalating drug crisis. During a recent Parliament session, he emphasized the need for the church to transition from its traditional role as a moral authority to becoming an active participant in the fight against drug abuse, which has increasingly impacted society.

Highlighting the church’s historical significance in shaping Fiji’s values, Naivalurua stated, “The church is well organized and deeply committed to love and healing. It is a partner in the fight against drugs.” He stressed that drug misuse is not just a governmental issue but a societal challenge that requires the united efforts of faith-based organizations to move beyond preaching and to engage in concrete actions.

The Minister also reiterated concerns voiced in earlier sessions regarding the rising crime rates in Fiji, which recorded a 27 percent influx in 2024 and a further 26 percent increase in early 2025. In this light, he called upon community leaders, educational institutions, and law enforcement to amplify their efforts in confronting this urgent challenge. He commended the Turaga na Tui Namosi, a traditional chief, for his commitment to collaborating with the Fiji Police to rally local communities.

The Minister’s appeal for collective efforts resonates with ongoing dialogues around the necessity for a comprehensive strategy that includes an array of sectors in the battle against drugs.
