Gurjit Singh, a prominent figure in Fijian football, began his coaching career at the young age of 22 and has since dedicated over 45 years to the sport. Known for his extensive experience, he has coached nearly all of the elite teams in Fiji, with the exception of his hometown team, Ba.

Singh, who grew up in Mataniqara, Ba, began his education at Khalsa College before pursuing further studies in India. Upon returning to Fiji, he became a physical education instructor, which marked the start of his coaching journey. He ascended from coaching school teams to spearheading district and national squads.

Recently, Singh was honored at a ceremony held by the Fiji Football Association in Nadi, where he was inducted into the Fiji FA Legends Club, recognizing his significant contributions to football. Additionally, he was presented with a lifetime access Fiji FA Gold Card for all association events.

Known affectionately as “Guru,” he reflected on his storied career and shared memorable achievements, such as leading the Fiji U20 team to the OFC World Cup qualifier finals and orchestrating Suva’s long-awaited Inter District Championship win after 28 years.

Singh has a remarkable record that includes coaching Nadi to two consecutive IDC titles in the 1990s, guiding Labasa to victory after a 17-year dry spell in 2011, and nurturing Navua to their first IDC title in 2009. His coaching legacy is further enriched by his contributions to the national team and regional clubs as a technical advisor.

In his years of coaching, Singh has remained dedicated, even after moving to the United States in 2002. He has continued to engage with various teams and clubs, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to nurturing football talent, both in Fiji and abroad.

Despite his numerous achievements, Singh carries a strong desire to coach his hometown team, Ba, saying it would be a way to give back to the community where he started his football journey.
